Jonathan Lasker’s edgy playfulness

Jonathan Lasker is in his 60s now and so well established for a unique combination of sophistication and playfulness that his paintings easily command six figures plus.

(Below: Pride of Being, 1993. $300,000, at the Armory Show, Cheim and Read.  Above: When Dreams Work, 1992.)

“Lasker doesn’t waste a split-second in getting your attention,” wrote the L.A. Times. “His large oils on linen, which range from 5 to 9 feet on a side, make billboards look like wall flowers, easily overlooked objects that disappear into their surroundings. Even his sketchbook-size paintings pack a punch that belies their intimate dimensions.”

Reasonable Love, 2007

Lasker is considered by many to be one of the most influential artists of his generation, but he has aggravated others by constantly bucking the status quo.  Often controversial and always closely watched, the artists who followed him consider Lasker a force of rejuvenation in the art world over the last 30 years.
