American-born Italian-based painter Paul Rooms does such beautiful, detailed work. These are from his nautical “Logbook” series. He also does opera, fairy tales and concept illustrations, all of them with puzzle-like intensity.

Another great word for his work, thanks Susan. One reaons I like his work so much is that it’s reminiscent of fairy-tale-ish illustration, but surpasses it with style and wit.
