Installation artists top 2012 Sobey Award short list

Five young installation and multidisciplinary artists were shortlisted today for the 2012 Sobey Art Award, one of Canada’s most prestigious prizes.  (Above: Jason de Haan, Salt Beard (Mercury), salt and borrowed bust, 65 x 24 x 24”,  2010)

Gareth Moore, Jason de Haan, Derek Sullivan, Raphaelle de Groot and Eleanor King are in the running for the $50,000 prize, which celebrates contemporary art.  See more about the nominees here.

Established in 2002, the award is given to a Canadian artist under 40 who has exhibited in a public or commercial gallery within 18 months of being nominated.  The winner will be announced Nov. 16.

  1. So that’s a person wearing that second one! I like what Michellecfecit said – it does look like a rat’s pointy snout, and makes me think of the “rat race” we have to sometimes deal with.


  2. i totally get raphaelle de groot’s ‘port de tete’.
    with 3 kids i feel like i’m swimming through clutter
    like that daily!!

    in the shape of the bonnet i see a rat or dog’s head.


    • I can see why that would be. It’s an award that traditionally recognizes pushing-the-envelope contemporary artists. (You might find the other three nominees interesting, some unusual installations on the award page)
