If you’re a fan of Studio Ghibli, you already know that Hayao Miyazaki’s long-awaited fantastical epic feature film, The Boy and the Heron, opened in Japan in July, 2023 without any marketing so that audiences could enjoy the visionary offering without any pre-conceived notions.
NOTE: This film won 83-year-old Mizyazaki his second Oscar at the awards in 2024. It beat Disney’s Elemental and Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse to win the Best Animated Feature Film.
Internationally, the film premieres Sept. 7 on opening night at the Toronto International Film Festival, the first time a Japanese film or an animated film has opened the Festival. The original story was written and directed by the Japanese filmmaker and produced by Oscar®-winning Studio Ghibli, which Miyazaki co-founded.
Several of Studio Ghibli’s films have played at TIFF previously, including The Red Turtle (2016), The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2014), The Wind Rises (2013), From Up on Poppy Hill (2011), Spirited Away (2002), and Princess Mononoke (1999).
