Through the Fog: Kristina Søbstad’s Immersive Art

These works by Kristina Søbstad are on exhibition in Through the Fog at Katzman Art Projects in Halifax, showcasing the Canadian-Norwegian artist’s focus on remote communities.

“My interest and focus on remote or isolated communities arose from experiencing and interrogating/exploring/learning distinct ways of being in these places compared to urban settings,” says Søbstad, who has done residencies in Chile and northern Iceland.

Søbstad goes for full immersion with her work: “deep on the trails, covered in mud, burrs and swamp.”

“My process is intuitive and involves a full immersion into the natural environment: documenting, sketching, exploring, engaging, experiencing. These aren’t little dates, an afternoon with my easel overlooking a pretty vista. These are full-blown, love affairs that last weeks if not months, where I get close and intimate: going deep on the trails and getting covered in mud, burrs and swamp; wading the tidal pools and palpating mussels to find pearls; seeking out the hidden through patience and quiet respect.” -Kristina Søbstad

Her abstracted landscape paintings have been shown in more than 300 international group and solo exhibitions. The works have been purchased by the Canada Council Art Bank for their permanent collection, and collections including the Paris Francophile Art Bank, among others.

Søbstad, who has a BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax, is currently based in Newfoundland.
