We have the power to dominate the natural world or to nurture it; to exploit wildlife or to be in service to it. The choice is ours.โ€™ – Richard Calver

Richard Calverโ€™s ethos can be found in his reverence for the natural world. He believed โ€˜each leaf and branch uncoils and stretches out according to its own rhythmโ€™, a conviction apparent in the path he made for himself as an artist.

This rhythm was the life force that forged his unique illustrative and expressive style. He was born in 1946 in Oxfordshire, England, and his appreciation for nature in all its forms was nurtured by his upbringing, going on to flourish in Canada. He was also a student of the renowned printmaker Sybil Andrews, also a British expat who resettled in British Columbia. (See previous Art Junkie posts on Andrews here.)
