Florent Stosskopf is a self-taught painter based in Brittany, France, who takes a contemporary perspective on traditional and historical art themes.

Through the use of bright colours and razor-sharp line-work, his complex scenes borrow from Classical Antiquity, the Baroque movement, and Modernism as well as his own repertoire, says Duran Contemporain in Montreal, where he is on exhibition.

Some of the works in the show titled Spirit of Ecstasy are inspired by Edvard Munchโs psychologically charged interiors, including Red Still Life, above. (See more on the Munch influence on Instagram, here.)

“There’s a pop art feel to the brightly coloured applications, but also many details that can be found in Baroque, Classical or Romantic paintings. When you look at my work, you don’t know which era you are in.” Florent Stosskopf

“The sheer flatness of the works references Stosskopfโs so-called former life as a graphic designer, but it is precisely that sensibility that lends itself to such vibrant paintings, teeming with energy and joie de vivre,” the gallery says.
