Vessela Brakalova arrived in Canada as a political refugee in 1990 from Bulgaria, where she had been through rigorous art training from the age of 12, earned an MFA and worked in book publishing.

Soon after, she became a founding partner of the successful design firm Vis-a-Vis Graphics Inc, in St. Philip’s, Newfoundland, with a reputation for ingenious design, publishing and interpretive design. Her special touch with unconventional techniques won a gold medal for book design.

Then classical mosaic hijacked her artistic life, says Christina Parker gallery in St John’s, Newfoundland, which represents Brakalova .

“Modern, personal interpretations of this ancient medium led to major exhibitions at home and abroad, notably in International Art and Contemporary Mosaic MUSIWA15, Florence, Italy, followed in 2018 by a major commission of mosaic-inspired murals for St. Johnโs International Airport with the estimated annual audience of 1.5 million travellers,” her artist page at the gallery says.
Brakalova’s work will be in a group exhibition March 8 to 30 at Christina Parker.
