A bustling cafรฉ scene with patrons enjoying their time. The interior features a large chandelier, a checkerboard floor, and various tables. People are seen chatting, working on laptops, and ordering at the counter filled with food items.

Illustrator Henry Hao’s unerring eye for Toronto’s urban spaces makes him a favourite, first posted here on the Art Junkie in 2024 (here). This is one of his latest pieces (Above, on Instagram, here)

Interior of a stylish restaurant featuring high ceilings, large decorative pendant lights, and a long bar counter. Patrons are seated at tables with yellow tablecloths, while shelves behind the bar display a variety of bottles.

This watercolor piece (Under Amber Light, 24 ร— 30″ on birch panel) is of El Catrin Destileria, a popular Mexican restaurant in Toronto’s historic Distillery District.ย Hao says he “wanted to capture not just the room,โ€จbut the feeling of standing beneath that amber glow. If you could step into this scene,โ€จwhere would you sit?”

Illustration of a colorful building with the word 'Palace' prominently displayed on the facade, surrounded by a vibrant mural filled with various whimsical designs and characters.

Palace, above, has been acquired by the Toronto Public Library (here)

An illustrated scene of a historic church with a tall spire, surrounded by trees and pedestrians. A red and white tram is seen in the foreground, traveling along a curved street under a bright blue sky with fluffy clouds.

This is one of my favourite Toronto street corners, with St. James Cathedral and the iconic King streetcar. Hao is one of the few illustrators I know who can make a scene like this come so alive. ย And in the same general neighborhood, here below is Winter Radiance in Shadows (on Instagram here)

A lively street scene featuring the Senator Restaurant, with a colorful mural of a person enjoying breakfast. Several parked cars are lined along the side of the narrow street, and a pedestrian is walking past.

“In the midst of towering structures on Victoria Street, where sunlight struggles to pierce through, I stumbled upon a temporary pause in the urban jungle,” Hao says. “A makeshift parking lot interrupted the continuity of buildings, and there, the radiant sunlight adorned the exterior of a breakfast joint. A lazy white cat perched on a car roof, adding a touch of simplicity and warmth to the scene. Sometimes, it’s in these fleeting moments that we find unexpected beauty.”
