Multidisciplinary artist Anastasia Tiller takes a whimsical new spin on the traditional Newfoundland and Labrador art of rug hooking.

Using a fantastical approach to ocean creatures, Tiller creates imagery that’s a playful departure from traditional approaches. (See this heritage rug registry for examples of its history, via the Rug Hooking Guild of Newfoundland and Labrador)

I use playful popping colours and contemporary design to create imaginative worlds. I am in๏ฌuenced by ๏ฌora and fauna as well as a rich geological history of Newfoundland and Labrador -Anastasia Tiller

“These creatures are made by hooking various fibres through burlap, cotton, or linen backing,” says Tiller, based on the Bonavista Peninsula in Newfoundland. “This intricate process of rug hooking is very popular in Atlantic Canada, where I live and work.”
