Dutch artist Theo Jansen has spent 20 years perfecting these giant mechanical creatures called Strandbeests that can walk on their own. With skeletons fashioned from lightweight PVC tubes, wind propels their wing-like sails, which then drives their feet to walk sideways.
Strandbeest: The Dream Machines exhibition brings the distinctive moving sculptures to Chicago, the first large-scale museum tour of the beach creatures in the U.S. It celebrates the thrill of their unique walking style and shows how they have evolved on the Dutch seacoast over the decades.

he is so talented, in both creativity and art.
I so agree, and am in awe of his intention to keep on evolving them until they’re self-sufficient.
I love the strandbeest!
I saw these creations come to life in a documentary – truly spectacular
On my bucket list to see one live one day!
Holy Moly! I would run down to Chicago if the actual beests were going to be there, but I don’t think they are. This is fascinating!
Yes, they are. You can walk with them across Michigan Avenue and other locations. Schedule on the exhibition link in the post. Go see!!
Here’s a link to an article about the walks. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/museums/ct-strandbeest-sculpture-ent-0205-20160204-story.html
