Dutch artist Theo Jansen has spent 20 years perfecting these giant mechanical creatures called Strandbeests that can walk on their own. With skeletons fashioned from lightweight PVC tubes, wind propels their wing-like sails, which then drives their feet to walk sideways.
Strandbeest: The Dream Machines exhibition brings the distinctive moving sculptures to Chicago through April, the first large-scale museum tour of the beach creatures in the U.S. It celebrates the thrill of their unique walking style and shows how they have evolved on the Dutch seacoast over the decades. I so agree, and am in awe of his intention to keep on evolving them until they’re self-sufficient.

Holy Moly! I would run down to Chicago if the actual beests were going to be there, but I don’t think they are. This is fascinating!
