Justin Ming Yong – Quilts

If you are aquainted with a quilter, you will know that the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky is recognized as one of the world’s top contemporary collections. That’s where Toronto multidiscilplinary artist Justin Ming Yong has a solo exhbition this year, through August.

A photographer who picked up quilting in his 30s, Yong explores unconventional, modern approaches in an otherwise classically folk-art medium. His conversion to the craft occured when studios shut down due to the pandemic, and he began to pursue a long-time interest in the “physicality of textiles.”

Yong also currently has work showing in On a Table, Over Time at The Plumb in Toronto until April 9. His exhibition To Fill a Field at The National Quilt Museum Kentucky runs until August 8.

A superb Toronto Life feature from 2021 about Yong’s so-called “job swap” into quilting, here.
