There’s major controversy over a now deleted TikTok posted by the British Museum: Was it sexist? Or was it just a bit of fun?

The museum posted a TikTok with the following advice:

โ€œGirlies if youโ€™re single and looking for a man, this is your sign to go to the British Museumโ€™s new exhibitionย Life in the Roman Armyย and walk around looking confused youโ€™re welcome x.โ€

ย People were not happy about it , claiming the TikTok was sexist, that it was an example of “mansplaining” and that at the very least, it was totally misguided marketing. More comments here.

The Tik Tok video has now been removed from the British Museum’s account, but you can view it by going to this page and scrolling down to the saved video.

  • Well, itโ€™s not a professional message, ie use of โ€œGirlies,โ€ and โ€œwalking around looking confused. Youโ€™re welcome.โ€ Seems like an outsider posted on their account. Certainly not what I would consider a professional British message – LOL! Good way to get peopleโ€™s attention. Just the word, โ€œGirliesโ€ is old fashioned. Thanks for giving me something to chuckle about.

Something to say?
