Lens-based visual artist Greg Staats has been awarded a Governor Generalโs Awards in Visual and Media Arts in recognition of his work in photography, video, and installation. Staatsย isย Skarรนยทrฤส (Tuscarora) andย Kanien’kehรก:ka (Mohawk) from Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontarioย and is based in Toronto.
Staats’sย photographyย work combines language, mnemonics, and the landscape of Six Nations. He said heย returns thereย because it was and still isย a safe and sacred place for rejuvenation. Staatsย said he conceptualizesย Haudenosaunee cultureย throughย relationships ofย trauma and renewal.
