Karla Doell has a passion for exploring new countries and cultures through her camera lens, for inspiration. Later, in her studio, Doell incorporates her original photographic images into unique, mixed media paintings.

โ€œAs a photographer and painter, my work examines the use of photo-based images as a starting point, helping to initiate the painting process,” Doell says.

Then she will add unexpected color and marks, painterly brushstrokes, sprayed text or random drips, splatters and smudges, “all to blur the lines of naturalism,” Doell says.

Doell uses mediums such as acrylic, plaster, charcoal, pastels, encaustic, gel, and photo-based imagery to achieve the results she seeks. She also says she never plans ahead.
