A panoramic view of an open field with two horses grazing near a small pond, under a cloudy sky.

This is Jolicure Pond, N.B., one of the places that artist Thaddeus Holownia has photographed over time in a series of colour landscape portraits. The work examines the changing face of light above the horizon and in the landscape, and particularly the surface of the pond.

Holownia’s 2025 Governor General’s Award for Artistic Achievement recognizes the body of work of the British-born, Canadian artist and professor (Mount Allison) for his contribution to contemporary visual arts. This video, issued by the awards organization, explores his work.

In a society full of fast-paced pedestrians, flashing lights and blinking signs, Holownia has slowed us down. In his nod to the beauty of our land, his work invites you to sit down, ponder and reflect – Corkin Gallery
