This Quebec artist offers a new interpretation of nature, revealing the beauty of its often-overlooked details. She is on exhibition to March 14, 2026 at The Guild (La Guilde) in Montreal.

Marie-Andrée Côté says “seeds, cells, microbiological elements and microscopic algae have sparked and nourished my imagination for more than fifteen years. I render nature’s smallest details in ceramic art.”

Starting with photographs taken in the moment, she breaks down their constituent parts to retain the essence: the forms of flowers, fruits, and seeds. Then, through the patient work of a ceramicist or photographer, she invents petals and leaves that accumulate and are recomposed into a meaningful whole – notes for her exhibition This Connection that Lives Within Me (Ce Lien qui m’habite)

Côté’s expertise as a ceramicist and photographer allows her to create works with sensual textures and impeccable finishes, notes for the exhibition say: “Intriguing without being impenetrable, their details invite contemplation.”

Marie-Andrée Côté lives and works in the Laurentians, and has presented numerous solo exhibitions in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. She has also completed several international artist residencies, in Kansas, at the University of Denver in Colorado, in the Czech Republic, and in Morocco.

Among Cote’s major achievements are two monumental mobiles created in 2014-2015 for the cruise ships Le Soléal and Le Lyrial (Ancona, Italy), as well as a large-format work integrated into the collection of the Katara Towers in Qatar in 2023. I saw this exhibition last week. The works are gorgeous…very sensual.
I wish I’d been able to see it. The smaller pieces look like invitations to run your hands over the work (not that I would but still … )
