The first picture is so beautifully detailed, looks more like a painting than sketchbook. However, I think sketchbooks have really gotten more detailed, i.e. I think of a sketchbook as quick sketching.

I think the emergence of Instagram and Pinterest etc has enabled artists to think about their sketchbooks as canvases instead of just a first draft, although obviously lots of artists still see sketchbooks as the technical aids they were originally. I like both, a lot.
