One of the pleasures of daily art browsing in this country is the superb Art Canada Institute site, which produces full-length, downloadable books on Canadian artists, endless features and excellent newletters, like this one.

A graphic featuring the title 'The Art of the Game: Canadian Artists and Athletics' with an illustration of athletes playing soccer. The text discusses the inspiration sports provide to Canadian artists during the World Cup.

The piece features examples of the sports related images of nine Canadian artists including one of my all-time favourite works, The Audience by Michael Snow. (Read more about Snow’s instantly recognized sculpture on a previous Canadian Art Junkie post.)

Toronto artist Michael Snow (1928โ€“2023) worked across a range of media, including film, sculpture, music, painting, and photography. In 1988, he was commissioned to create The Audience, a whimsical, modern take on traditional gargoyles, for the walls of the Rogers Centre (then SkyDome). Mounted high above the ground, a crowd of spectators spills out from the side of the stadium. Each figure, roughly six meters tall, is a caricature of a typical sports fanโ€” pointing, cheering, booing, and eating. They greet Blue Jays supporters as they file into the stadium, playfully shifting attention onto the spectators themselves – Art Canada Institute
