Robyn Cumming’s ever evolving and sometimes disturbing work is featured at next month’s Photorama, the 25th anniversary of the Toronto Photographers Workshop annual fundraising exhibit.
Her extensive body of work sometimes is a challenge to interpret, something the Toronto-based photo artist acknowledges.
There is a strangeness to how my work is experienced by viewers. They are often simultaneously seduced and repelled.” -Robyn Cumming, interview Magenta.
These pieces are all from Lady Things, a series of well-clothed women created without faces, part of Cumming’s exploration of femininity and the objectification of beauty.
“The women are presented as shamanistic outsiders: imbued with powerful magic, unknowable and sexual, yet unreachable because of their separation from society.” -Review, Vue Weekly
The Photorama in Toronto includes more than 70 artists exhibiting contemporary photography and lens-based work. It opens Dec. 2. Robyn Cumming’s CV and work are on her website here.

I do like the Lady Things series. They remind me of butterflies – beautiful from a distance, but strange and a little bit scary up close!
