Letitia Fraser is an emerging Black female Nova Scotian artist who uses collage, quilting and figurative painting in her portraits of family and community members, on exhibition online with the Portrait Gallery of Canada. The work above is Covered Path, 2023, acrylic on quilt, 91.4 cm x 122 cm.

The exhibition title – This is My Fabric – references the inspiration Fraser takes from the deep roots in her home community of North Preston, NS, and her lineage of quilting through her grandmother and other members of the community.

A short film by acclaimed film director David Hartman accompanies the exhibition – filled with examples of Fraser’s artistry, as well as her thoughts on growing up Black in Nova Scotia.

Beautiful and vibrant portraits. I love the first one, where she shows the movement in that purple shirt. Then the lady peeling an apple, I feel like I am sitting at the table with her. Amazing.
They are vibrant, definitely. Good point. If you get a chance, go to the website and watch the film. She’s truly interesting.
Yes, I will do that. Thanks
