I was sorry to hear of the passing of celebrated artist Beau Dick this week, a Kwakwaka’wakw master carver and a hereditary chief from the northern tip of Vancouver Island.
He was known for his mask carvings and as an advocate for Aboriginal rights. You may have noticed that a previous post about him on Canadian Art Junkie has been very popular this week. See that post here.

So sorry. A wonderful artist.
He has joined the spirit world,and I’ve no doubt his celebrity has followed him there!
Right, especially because so much of his work was spiritually ceremonial. Truly a pioneer.
Yes, the burning of the masks! Very special, in that it shows the beauty of reality, yet defers to what is beyond what we know, to the spiritual.
It makes me think………
